Following the proclamation of the First Empire on 28 Floréal, Year XII (May 18, 1804), Napoleon chose the eagle for his coat of arms among a proliferation of symbols.
The English leopard can only hiss towards the void of the sky in front of the messenger of Zeus.
The thunderbolt, a legendary weapon given to the future king of Olympus by the Cyclopes in order to defeat the Titans, reinforces the Jupiterian incarnation of the emperor.
The king of the air becomes a symbol of identification and rallying for the soldiers after Napoleon, modeled on the legions of the Roman Empire, handed over, at the end of 1804, an eagle which will adorn the pole of the standard of each regiment. .
These bronze birds of prey, from an original by Antoine Denis Chaudet, bore on a casing the number of the regiment or, exceptionally, the motto granted by the Emperor. They took on an almost mystical dimension and were defended head on when necessary, also becoming exceptional war prizes for the enemy!
The flag eagle knew 3 models, the original ones from 1804, a few examples created in 1810 to equip new regiments or replace eagles lost in combat, then in 1815 after the Restoration had melted down these imperial symbols.
